The panic over the future of currency notes began recently when a video on YouTube went viral over the past few days, claiming that the ₹500 notes will be phased out starting March 2026. The 12-minute-long video, uploaded on a channel named Capital TV and gaining more than five lakh views since June 2, triggered confusion and panic among people.

In fact, the ₹500 note continues to be legal tender and is currently being circulated and accepted across the country. The speculation seems to have arisen from a misinterpretation of a recent RBI circular issued in April 2025. In that circular, the RBI instructed banks and White Label ATM Operators (WLAOs) to increase the availability of ₹100 and ₹200 denomination notes through ATMs. This move aims to enhance access to lower denomination currency for day-to-day transactions.
दरअसल, 500 रुपये का नोट अभी भी वैध मुद्रा है और वर्तमान में पूरे देश में प्रचलन में है और स्वीकार किया जाता है। ऐसा लगता है कि यह अटकलें अप्रैल 2025 में जारी RBI के हालिया सर्कुलर की गलत व्याख्या के कारण पैदा हुई हैं। उस सर्कुलर में RBI ने बैंकों और व्हाइट लेबल ATM ऑपरेटरों (WLAO) को ATM के ज़रिए 100 और 200 रुपये के नोटों की उपलब्धता बढ़ाने का निर्देश दिया था। इस कदम का उद्देश्य रोज़मर्रा के लेन-देन के लिए कम मूल्य वाली मुद्रा तक पहुँच बढ़ाना है।
